Hollywood’s landscape has shifted drastically in the last few years, especially in terms of famous actresses, one of whom is Melissa McCarthy. Not only is she being recognized for how much money she is making, but for the surprising way she conducts her day to day life. Unlike many Hollywood stars’ jam-packed schedules where it seems as though personal time and self-care don’t exist, McCarthy’s daily routine is something we can actually get behind!

At the age of 20-years-old, McCarthy trapped herself in a vicious cycle of crippling credit card debt. To top if all off, she was struggling to get by as an amateur comedian. [1] But this isn’t a biography, so let’s fast forward about a quarter of a century…

Now 47-years-old and having earned $12 million in 2018, Forbes reported she is worth a whopping $60 million. According to Forbes, she is even one of the world’s highest-paid women in Hollywood – a far cry from the young adult who was drowning in debt not too long ago. [2,3]

Why Melissa McCarthy Leaves Hollywood at the Door

Although many of you will understandably cringe at her wake-up time – 4:30 a.m. – her early starts aren’t packed with photo-ops, meetings, filming, interviews, and the like. McCarthy actually seems to dislike that kind schedule.

In contrast, she prefers waking up before everyone else to enjoy some quiet time alone sipping coffee, watching her favorite shows, reading print versions of The Los Angeles Times and National Geographic, and then having a soothing bath while scrolling through Pinterest and Etsy. We can all take some notes from her way of life.

Surprisingly, in a fast-paced world, McCarthy manages to maximize her limited time in a way that enriches her life. This is largely thanks to her sense of perception and self-awareness; McCarthy knows how damaging living the stereotypical life that so many people in that world live – or at least try to.

“She hates how the entire world is set up to make people more efficient. She hates the trend that every home needs an open-concept design of one room leading to another, Brodesser-Akner reported. [1] “She sees what it’s really about, which is not you spending time with your kids while you cook and they water TV but you being able to be everywhere at once… We are literally knocking down walls to help ourselves multitask.

The way that she sees it, that way of life isn’t necessary or conducive for long-term happiness and mental health. And don’t even get her started on the bane of technology…

“She sees why phones are necessary, she accepts their existence, but she thinks the world got much worse and more apathetic and less willing to say ‘Yes’ and ‘Why not?’ the minute everyone had a smartphone. She’ll post on Instagram but she won’t read Instagram. She won’t even do email. People can text her or they can call her. Email will drown her. [1]

McCarthy believes this so wholeheartedly that she and her husband, Ben Falcone, even have a rule for weekends: put the phones away and disconnect from technology.

3 Takeaways from Melissa McCarthy’s Not-Very-Hollywood Routine

Sure, McCarthy probably has tens of millions more than everyone reading this article but, at the end of the day, she is still human and her lifestyle reflects that. So, here’s a short list of things to try and do in your own life to make it more fulfilling.

1) Make Time for Yourself

Sometimes, the prospect of being left all alone can be daunting. But science says it’s actually helpful in more than one way. According to Toronto-based life coach and psychotherapist, “Time alone increases creativity, self-awareness, problem-solving, understanding and meeting one’s need and feelings. It’s a time to rest and recuperate the mind and the body. [4]

2) Technology Detox Every Once in a While

Addiction to phones and other types of technology is a real problem. Studies have shows that phone addiction can increase an individual’s risk of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, neck problems, eye strain, and more. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, researchers have compared cell phone addiction to gambling addiction. [5]

3) Multitasking Is Not Always More Productive

It seems like McCarthy is a fan of focusing on one thing at a time and you should be, too! Numerous studies have shown that multitasking – even on as little two things at a time – can be stressful, negatively affect your creativity, lower your quality or performance of each task, and interrupt your short-term memory. [6]

Regardless of social status, these are all things that can greatly improve your life and the lives of those around you. Life is too short to feel oppressed by others’ unrealistic expectations and get caught up in rigid schedules that take away from the things and people that truly matter. So, we hope these simple yet significant takeaways from McCarthy’s routine help you moving forward.
