Imagine…

After months of planning, endless consultations, drowning in details about color schemes and décor, all the fittings to make sure the wedding dress fits perfectly… that it was all for nothing.

Every now and then, you hear wedding day horror stories about a bride or groom getting cold feet and not showing up. In this story, the bride and groom were both present. But, let’s backtrack to the night before.

On the night before the wedding, Casey (the bride-to-be) was spending the last night of her unwed life with her best friends. But her phone kept buzzing – and her girlfriends noticed, too.

“Phone is running hot tonight, one of her bridesmaid’s teased. (1)

Unfortunately, their playfulness didn’t last long.

When Casey looked at her phone, she was shocked to open a series of screenshots from a number she didn’t recognize. On top of the graphic and intimate text messages between her former fiancé and this stranger, Casey also received selfies of the pair.

Some of the text messages, dated from months prior to just days before the wedding, read:

“This weekend. You and I. It is on, hot stuff. Bring your A game,” one read.

“Your body is… incredible. And… do you know how to use it. I wish my GF had half the skills you do, read another.

“I miss you so much. I can’t stop thinking about L, S, F’ing you. I’ve never had this kind of connection before.”

Another text message said, “I wouldn’t marry him. Will you?

You can imagine the slew of emotions running through her mind… Naturally, Casey broke down in tears. Her girlfriends even insisted they call and confront her fiancé and call the wedding off immediately.

Unsure what to do and at a loss for words, Casey decided to sleep on it before making any rash decisions.

“Every word like a dagger in my heart and my wedding was only hours away. How could I cancel when everyone had already travelled to be there and everything was paid for? … I loved Alex. I wanted to marry Alex tomorrow. I was too shocked and sad to be angry. I didn’t call him.

That night, she got zero sleep. Instead, she figured out what she would do.

In the morning, Casey got ready, make-up and all, put on her wedding dress, and arrived at the church.

“I walked down the aisle with leaden feet, my dream dress now just a costume.

However, when the unsuspecting groom-to-be arrived at the front of the room, Casey turned towards their friends and family, and made an announcement.

“There will be no wedding today. It seems Alex is not who I thought he was.

The silence that followed was crippling. And then, Casey read every single message she received the night before to everyone in attendance. With nothing to say, the ex-groom and his best man exited the church.

Incredibly, Casey composed herself and somehow managed to find a silver lining in the midst of her disaster. Again, she turned to her guests…

“I love all of you and as horrible as this is I’m glad you all are here. There will not be a wedding reception today, but instead, there will be a celebration of honesty, finding true love and following your heart even when it hurts.

Something like this takes an emotional toll on a person. But, it seems like Casey handled this life-changing circumstance pretty expertly. After all…

“It was certainly not the wedding day I had planned but to our credit, it was one hell of a party.
