Unfortunately, we’ve got another case of the bacteria that keeps on giving. On Thursday, October 4, 2018, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety Inspection Service announced that meat producer JBS Tolleson Inc. is recalling about 6,937,195 pounds of “various raw, non-intact beef products that may be contaminated with Salmonella. [1]

According to the CDC, the beef products were packaged and produced between July 26, 2018 and September 7, 2018. Although these kinds of outbreaks can be local, JBS Tolleson shipped these products nationally and thus may make the Salmonella infection harder to contain. [2]

Who Has This Multistate Salmonella Outbreak Affected?

So far, 15 of the 57 cases of Salmonella reported have resulted in hospitalization. Thankfully, this outbreak has not yet caused any deaths. Due to these beef products’ nationwide distribution, 16 states have been affected: [3]

  • Arizona (15)

  • Colorado (12)
  • Idaho (1)
  • Iowa (1)
  • Illinois (1)

Have You Bought Any Ground Beef Products Lately?

If you have any ground beef products – especially ones that could have been produced and distributed with the July and September dates – we suggest taking a look in your freezer(s). What you’re looking for is this establishment number: EST. 267. [4]

Should you see that establishment number on ground beef packaging, call the store you bought it from immediately and ask if it was one of the recalled products. Then, you can either return it to the store or throw it away.

Think you or someone you know may be infected with Salmonella?
