We are in the thick of the holidays and at the start of the winter season. Two things that throw most of us for a loop. The days are short, the temperature is dropping and we all kind of feel the need to hibernate.  On top of that we are stressed about finding just the right gift for everyone on our list, sleeping less and eating more because we are hitting up late night holiday parties.

It’s a challenge to reach for healthier food options when there’s a plate full of cookies everywhere you go.

Being healthy and relaxed makes it easier for you to accomplish all the wonderful things you want to do for family and friends. It’s tough to shop, decorate or cook when you feel run down, have a cold, or need sleep.

Whether you’re traveling to be with your families or staying home, it’s essential to remember to focus on your own needs as well during this busy time of year and as the new year approaches.

Remember – you can’t take care of others, unless you take care of yourself first.

Here are ways to take care of yourself over the holidays and and into the new year.

Breathe

I know it’s cliche and it seems like everyone says it, but it’s so true. When’s the last time you took a nice a DEEP breath and then let it all out with a big sigh? Try it and it will instantly make you feel better.

Sleep

When life gets busy and there just doesn’t seem like there’s enough time in the day to get everything done, what usually is the first to go? Sleep. We stay up later. We get up earlier. Make sleep a priority! It’s easy to think that a few extra hours of work will do you more good, but it won’t. Sleep will.

Get Outside

Spending time outside on a walk, run or hike will instantly boost your mood. True story. I mean, how can it not? I think fresh air and sunshine is the cure for almost anything. However, with the limited amount of daylight hours now, it’s hard to get ample Vitamin D, especially here in the New Hampshire. I started supplementing it last year after my stress fracture.  Even though the sun may not shine everyday, we still make it a point to get outside.  One thing I’ve learned over the years is that winter is a lot more enjoyable if you find activities outside that you keep you busy.  We enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, skating, hiking, sledding and of course, running (for me) during the cold months.  Fresh air does wonders for you mental outlook!

Listen to Music

Put on happy Christmas carols. Or 80s pop. Or country. Whatever floats your boat. Your favorite music will boost your mood and keep you happy. Bonus happy points if you turn it into a dance party!

Indulge and Eat Well

This time of year is when the indulging monster comes out. By all means, I’m all for indulging and enjoying your favorite holiday treats.  But don’t forget to eat really well during 80-90% of the time. Eat greens and whole foods at every meal. Don’t eat the junk you don’t really care about just because it’s there. This isn’t the only time of year to eat cookies. There’s no rule that Christmas cookies can only be eaten in December!

Supplement What You Can

Supplements help fill the gaps in our diet. You all know I love supplementing with Turmeric. I’ve been adding Turmeric powder to smoothies, like my Mango Turmeric Recovery Smoothie, post run for the healthy inflammatory benefit.* Now MegaFood® has made it even easier for me to get my daily dose of turmeric during this hectic time of year. The new Turmeric Inflammation Response* Gummies are a delicious, easy and effective way to support a healthy inflammatory response.* Not to mention gummy vitamins are a lot more fitting in the winter than a cold smoothie!

Made with farm fresh roots of organic turmeric and organic ginger, they are easy to take and include organic black pepper extract to support the absorption of curcuminoids.* They also include organic carrot and organic ginger, both a natural source of phytonutrients.*

There’s also two other new MegaFood® gummy flavors: Elderberry Immune Support* Gummy  for an immune system boost and Melatonin Berry Good Sleepâ„¢* Gummy to support a healthy sleep cycle.* I’m adding these to my holiday self-care routine.

All MegaFood gummies are made with real food to deliver a range of health-promoting compounds – no high-fructose corn syrup, gelatin, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives of any kind. And, like all MegaFood products they are certified Glyphosate Residue Free. Made without a sugar coating, these delicious gummies have just 2 grams of sugar or less per serving.

Because real is what you want!

Wash your Hands

The easiest way to protect yourself from nasty viruses is to wash your hands.  If you don’t have access to a sink, hand sanitizer does the trick. When in doubt, wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands.
