My week in workouts were all about being thankful for the ability to move. But then again, I’m thankful for that every week. My week in workouts was also about eating lots of good food, time with family and kicking off the festive holiday season.
Monday
Rest day
Friday is usually my rest day but when my alarm went off Monday morning, I was tired and achy. I opted for more sleep. Later in the day, I was feeling much better and was kind of kicking myself for taking a rest day. But with this being a holiday week, I knew things were going to be off anyway. And plus, my body was telling me something. I’m trying to be better about that whole listening to it thing.
I’m thankful for not getting sick!
Tuesday
6 mile trail run
On Tuesday’s we run trails. And matching Skida (affiliate link) headbands. Hahaha! The headbands were an accident but it was quite funny that Anya, Jen and I all had the same idea.
It seems like it has rained every single Tuesday for the last month. Today, the sun was out and it was ahhhhhmazing! We explored some trails in a nearby town. The funny thing is that even though I’ve lived here for almost 14 years, I had only been on part of those trails once. And that was for a short walk years ago. I’ve been missing out! I thought maybe you’d could get a couple of miles in but it turns out you can get tons. Anya said she’s done 12+ mile runs there and never had to do loops.
I think I found my new fav local trail.
I’m thankful for friends who have non-traditional work schedules like me so we can hit the trails together.
Wednesday
20 minutes Stepmill Intervals
20 minutes treadmill faux mountain climb: (you can find the workout on my Instagram saved under Faux Mountain Workouts
Strength training:
DB curtsy squats
Barbell SL deadlifts
Barbell lunges – front, lateral, reverse
Cable flys
Cable rows
TRX push ups
TRX SL row
Stability ball plank elbow circles
I’m thankful for treadmills when I can’t make it to the real deal mountains.
Thursday
3.2 mile Turkey Trot run/walk with the family
3.4 mile run for Max’s Turkey Trot
The fam and I hit the road for our annual Turkey Trot tradition on Thanksgiving. Last year the kiddos and Ron opted out because it was beyond cold. This year, it was raining and chilly but there were no excuses. Of course, I heard some grumbling but I explained that it would make me very happy for them to share this with me. That squashed the complaining until about mile 2ish. I think the best quote goes to Lukas when he said to me, “Why in the world do you do this for fun?!?!” Hahahaha!
I can’t wait for next year!
Once we got home, Max was a mad man. Since I was the only one who was not wiped out, I took Max out for his own Turkey Trot while Ron started our Thanksgiving Day feast.
Run or stay home and cook? Silly question.
I’m thankful for my family who puts up with my crazy running habits.
Friday
6.8 mile run
I am so not a Black Friday person. I love the deals but I could easily partake in the madness from the comfort of my bed instead of standing in line for hours. Thank you, Internet.
Kyle and I met up for our own Black Friday madness in the form of a run. That’s more my style. We tried to keep it easy pace but then we start talking about something that gets us fired up and our legs pick up the pace. At least we slowed down once we changed topics.
Later on I did a quick strength training workout:
Reverse lunge
Lateral lunge
SL Deadlift
Eccentric pull ups
DB Renegade rows
Plank KB pull thru
We spontaneously decided to get our Christmas tree on Friday. I think everyone else did too because the tree farm we go to was super busy. I later learned via Facebook that the farm shut down for the season as of mid day Sunday because all of their trees were gone. They just opened on Wednesday afternoon. Everyone is getting into the holiday spirit.
I’m thankful for local tree farms.
Saturday
3.6 mile trail run
The sun was shining Saturday morning but it was cold. Like real feel of 12 degrees. I procrastinated for quite some time and even thought about not running. I had run 4 days in a row so far. I can’t remember the last time I ran 4 consecutive days let alone 5. But Max needed to go out for at least a walk. With the wind blowing like crazy, I knew it would feel warmer on the trails thanks to the tree protection. That solved that.
We kept it easy pace and enjoyed the cold, crisp, fresh air. As we ran past a woman walking her dog on the trail, she commented on our matching orange attire. I couldn’t help of think of funny puns for the duration of the run. Like, ORANGE you glad you are running trails today? I know, I know. I’m hilarious.
I’m thankful for Max joining our family earlier this year. He’s become my favorite running buddy!
Sunday
6 mile run
With a full day of activities planned, a run had to happen before 8:30 a.m. or it wasn’t going to happen. I seriously debated on skipping the run when I saw the temps were 16 degrees. But as luck would have it, I was meeting Kyle for some easy miles. When I know someone is waiting on me, I’m 99.9% not going to bail.
My brain was telling me 16 degrees was going to feel brutally cold. In reality, it wasn’t that bad. The sun was shining with no wind so that made a world of difference. I know from my years of running that if my hands are warm and my neck is covered, I feel comfortable in almost any temp. Also, I don’t mind if my ankles are exposed. Weird, right? But…my mind still needs that reminder when I hesitate about going outside.
I’m thankful for running buddies who don’t question running in ALL the weather.
