Grottole has a very small population of 300 people, and there are over 600 houses sitting unoccupied in the small town. At the end of the first vacation month, Grottole will become an Airbnb destination, an ingenious plan to give life to the little town.

What’s in it for Airbnb?

Airbnb is sending the four guests over there to learn everything there is to know about the people of Grottole. They’ll be fully involved in the activities of the locals throughout their stay, enjoying Italian cappuccino and touring the beautiful countryside.

The temporary citizens will learn how to speak Italian, prepare wonderful Italian dishes, vegetable-farming the Grottole way. They’ll also learn how apiculture and production of olive oil. And lastly, how can someone spend three months in Italy and not learn how to make pasta?

These four guests will then serve as Airbnb travel instructors to people visiting Grottole. They’ll commence teaching the guests right after the first month. A lot of people are excited to visit this tiny, rustic town tucked away in Southern Italy.

There are several uninhabited homes, and, unfortunately, if nothing is done to increase the population, it may not be around long. This paid trip will be a win-win situation for everyone involved. Grottole gets re-vitalized, Airbnb adds another destination to its list, and four lucky people get to have the time of their lives.
