Ok, I’m going to share a big mistake I was making as a dentist for a long time. We all know the link between sugar and tooth decay. I would plead, BEG my patients to stop eating sugar. Despite all my efforts, whether it was kids or their parents, people kept eating sugar.

It was really frustrating for me for a long time. People were doing a lot of harm to their mouth and overall health. Yet they simply wouldn’t listen to me!

But here was the mistake I was making. I wasn’t giving them the right advice. Sure we know we shouldn’t be eating sugar, but unless we know what to replace it within our diet. It was actually pretty rich of me to say ‘oh just quit sugar.’ Reducing sugar in a patient’s diet is a whole lifestyle change – and they often need support!

The other thing is that sugar wasn’t the only culprit in the diet. Many of my patients ate plenty of bread, bakery goods or cereals that contain white flour. Now white flour, like sugar is a simple carbohydrate. So while you may think you’re not eating sugar when you have a piece of bread with white flour, that bread is being broken down and metabolized in the body as sugar.

Quitting sugar is easy to say. But as I focused on building nutritional principles for oral and whole body health, it’s clear people need help not only giving up sugar but white flour too!

Sure a healthy eating program means knowing your sugar intake. But when people give up sugar, they crave those simple carbohydrates. To compensate they will snack on bread and the like. The result is that their health doesn’t improve all that much, even though they think they’re eating less sugar.

So that’s when I realized that people needed help replacing this ‘feeling’ in the diet. Now I recommend having baked or ‘bread-like’ replacements without the white flour, like these coconut oil biscuits!

And the best news? They’re delicious. These sugar-free coconut oil biscuits have no flour and definitely no sugar. They give you a snack that feels like those delicious baked goods when you put them in your mouth, but without the simple sugars going into your mouth and gut.

Sugar-Free Coconut Oil Biscuit Recipe

Here’s the coconut oil biscuit recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups blanched almond flour

  • ¼ cup of coconut oil

  • 2 large eggs

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • pinch of sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Melt coconut oil and let cool.

  3. Put eggs into a mixing bowl and beat them lightly.

  4. Add rest of the ingredients and mix well.

  5. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, grease with coconut oil.

  6. Drop a tablespoon sized spoon full of the mixture onto the pan.

  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

These coconut oil biscuits are subtly, but you can also tweak these with your favorite herb or spice. Try cinnamon for a sweet taste or a rosemary for something more savory. Or just eat them with good old fashioned butter. Yum!
