A lot of things look a little different in 2020. Planes are grounded, public spaces are closed, students are studying online, and people are queuing to get into the grocery store in the same way they did to get into a club or concert just a few months ago.

Yes, COVID-19 has put a full stop on many aspects of our lives. There are some things, however, that even a global pandemic can’t cancel. One of those things is having a baby.

Welcome Baby Tucker

Nine months ago when Emily Yates and her fiance Tommy Edwards found out they were going to have a baby, they probably imagined the far-off due date playing out just like anyone else would:

  • Go into labor
  • Go to the hospital
  • Family and friends wait in the waiting room
  • Tommy goes out to announce the birth
  • Every meets the latest addition to the family

Of course, when the coronavirus swept across the United States and the country went into lockdown just a month before her due date, they knew that this was no longer going to be the scenario that they had imagined. (1, 2)

The New Normal

COVID rules meant that when Emily went into labor on April 22, the only person allowed to not just be in the delivery room but in the building at all was Tommy. The couple’s family refused to let this stop them from being there to support the pair, and of course to catch a glimpse of the child who’s arrival they had been excited for for months. (1, 2)

Emily’s mother Scarlett, Tommy’s parents Christi and Charlie, and Emily’s best friend Abby camped out all day in the parking lot below the window of Emily’s room. Emily’s mother was even there late the night before, returning early in the morning to be there for her daughter. (1, 2)

Shortly after 9 pm, baby Tucker was finally born. (1, 2)

Too excited to wait, new dad, Tommy waved from the window while the doctor held Tucker up for the whole family to see. (1, 2)

“Making the best of this beautiful moment in a pandemic wasn’t easy,” said Tommy’s mother Christi. “but it’s a beautiful memory in the middle of a crisis. If this is a new ‘normal’ for us then, by the grace of God, it is PERFECT!!” (1, 2)

Needless to say, the family is ecstatic, and this will certainly be a day none of them will ever forget.
