Angela Farnan, a primary charge nurse at OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois has officially become a mother to one of the tiny patients she cared for in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Blaze had his first surgery when he was just 3 days old. He needed a second surgery just months later, and he may require a heart transplant one day.

Blaze’s biological family, lived far away from the intensive care unit, and they did not have the resources to travel back and forth or take care of him financially. Angela with permission from his parents took Blaze into short-term guardianship, and after Blaze’s second surgery, Blaze’s biological mother tearfully requested Angela to adopt their son.

“It was quite an emotional day because my husband and I fell in love with him and it was getting close and closer to when we had to give him back,” Angela said.

Now proud parents, Angela and her husband, Rich say Blaze has a sweet personality and loves dancing to “Baby Shark” and Keith Urban songs.

“Becoming a parent for the first time, I can’t describe the feeling,” Angela said. “It was one of the best days of our lives.”
