Another week of workouts is done!
It’s hard to believe that the end of February is near. Just like every other week so far this winter, the weather has been all over the place. I was hoping for more snow for great skiing and snowshoeing while my kids have school vacation, but we’ve had more ice/freezing rain/snow mix than anything. It seems this week was nothing but dealing with ice, slop and rain. Not the greatest conditions for having fun, for running outside or for taking Max for walks. He is so freaking strong and loves to pull. I’m not sure he had much time on a leash before us. With all of his pulling, I’m thinking he’d be great at skijorning…that is if we had enough snow. Sigh.
Last week’s workouts
Monday
30 minute run, 9:19 avg pace
strength training:
DB bench press
DB pull over
SL reverse lunge w/ KB press
Lateral lunge with row and balance
Bench step ups with KB carry
Anti-rotational cable pull
TRX inverted row
TRX fall out
TRX mountain climbers
Banded pull ups
Eccentric pull ups
Med ball slams
For some reason I could not fathom staying at the gym to run after I was done lifting. It was a total time suck, but I made it home to get a quick 30 minute run in before getting ready for the day. The sidewalks were glare ice so I purposely chose roads that I knew would be clear of snow and very little traffic. Of course, I forgot about the ice when I cut across a small section of sidewalk and then wiped out. Thankfully, it was a slow motion, graceful fall so I didn’t hurt anything. Lesson learned: stay at the gym to run when you know the roads/sidewalks are icy.
Tuesday
4 mile treadmill hill climb
1 mile @ 1%
0.5 mile @ 3%
0.5 mile @ 12%
0.5 mile @ 5%
0.5 mile @ 10%
0.5 mile @ 5%
0.5 mile @ 2%
I woke up to single digits and zero desire to deal with it, especially in the dark. On days like this, I’m glad I have a treadmill option in my basement. It’s not glamorous but it gets the job done. Plus, it gives me a chance to work on elevation since I can’t get to the mountains every week for training.
Morning Flow Yoga @ Bending Bodhi
Wednesday
30 minutes Stepmill
strength training:
cable flys
single arm pulley rows in squat position
DB skiers
banded pull ups
eccentric pull ups
med ball slams
Thursday
50 minute run, 9:16 avg pace
We got about 4 inches of snow overnight with a little freezing rain. The kids had a two hour delay for school so that gave me an opportunity to run in the daylight. That was nice but it also meant there was a lot more traffic so I stuck to side roads. The side roads were a mix of salt, sand, unplowed sections and just a mess that makes running feel like a slow jog but at a really hard effort. Kind of like running in soft sand – SO fun. In case you didn’t get it, that’s me being sarcastic. I like running in fresh snow but not when it’s soft and mushy. The section pictured below is the best the whole run was…and that was in the cemetery. Yes, I will run in the cemetery when the roads are crap. You don’t have to worry about any traffic, right?
Friday
5.24 mile run, 8:51 avg pace
My brain is so used to piling on the layers for a run that it doesn’t know what to wear when it’s in the mid 30s – so warm! Kyle and I both misjudged what to wear. A long sleeve with a shell jacket was too much clothing. Note to self – a t-shirt would have been better. In addition to the warmer temps, it was nice to see a lot of the ice gone. No one needs that much ice!
Saturday
7.5 mile run, 9:11 avg pace
I originally had planned on taking Saturday as a rest day but then the forecast called for snow and eventually rain mix on Sunday. That didn’t sound like fun so I opted to run Saturday in sunshine and temps in the mid to upper 30s. The first few miles felt good but then my legs felt like lead, my lower back ached and I just felt so sluggish. I had been feeling off the past few days (not sick but not 100% either) so maybe that’s what hit me. I decided to bail on hitting 10 miles for the day. There was no point in pushing it.
Sunday
Rest day except for some easy yoga and lots of recovery tools to make my legs feel human again. We didn’t get any of the predicted snow just cold, heavy rain. Yuck.
How was your week in workouts?
Linking up with Hoho and Wendy for the weekly workout wrap up.
