My week in workouts last week kicked off official training for my first 30k! I’ve never raced that distance before so it’s an automatic PR, right? It’s such an odd distance – more than a half but less than a full. It’s a trail race with 3 loops of a 10k. The thought of doing loops sounds boring as hell to me but I’m going with it. Who knows? Maybe I’ll like it. We’ll see after the race, right?
Monday
30 minute Elliptical Intervals
Mobility + Strength Training
My right hip was feeling tight after last week’s fun in the snow. It was better than what it was but I wanted to ease back into gym workouts rather than going full out. The elliptical was perfect for a non-impact workout with no stress to my hip.
I made up for the easy cardio with strength training. I *thought* going a little lighter in weight would make me less sore but not so much. It’s crazy how much you feel it with only take one week off from weights. My glutes and hammies were talking to me till Thursday!
Tuesday
66 minute trail run, 403 ft elevation gain, 12:26 avg/pace
Jen, Jess, Anya and I met up for a lovely trail Tuesday run. The weather was gorgeous that we all were second guessing our attire after seeing a woman running in a tank on the way to the trailhead. Nonetheless, we all kept our shirts on (Hahaha!) and instead debated if we needed Microspikes. We knew there was going to be some icy spots but Anya and Jess opted for going spike-less and living dangerously. Jen and I brought ours along, “just in case”. Well, just in case turned into “we are putting our spikes on within a 1/2 mile from the trailhead because it’s shear ice”.
What ensued was Jess and Anya wandering way off the trail or scooting their butts down hills to avoid the ice and Jen and I stopping to wait for them or slowing way down so they could skate. It was quite entertaining for Jen and I safely in our spikes. Thankfully, no one fell and we all finished the run in one piece.
Wednesday
10 minutes ARC trainer warm up
30 minutes Stepmill intervals (2520 total steps)
Mobility and Strength Training
It had been 2 weeks since I did the Stepmill thanks to last week’s vaca. HOLY SWEAT. I feel this odd love for this machine even though it makes me question my sanity as I increase the speed levels weekly. I seriously contemplated only doing 15 minutes but then told myself get to 20 then you can stop. By the time I got to 20, I was like, “what’s 10 minutes more?” Gotta play the mind games.
I’ve got three mountain races coming up so I need all the climbing I can get. FYI – if you missed my uphill training tips, you can find it HERE.
Thursday
5 mile run with Kyle, 445 ft elev gain, 8:36 avg/pace
1.5 mile run with Max
Morning Flow Yoga @ Bending Bodhi
What better way to usher in another trip around the sun than with a hill attack run in the pre-dawn hours while wearing a HAPPY BIRTHDAY tiara? That’s what I told Kyle when we met up for our miles. I think she agreed it was a good way.
Once I left Kyle, I grabbed Max for an easy 1.5 mile cool down trot so he could do his morning business.
I think I mentioned this at some point since January 1st, but I vowed to see my yoga mat more often since we’ve kind of lost touch in the past few months. I finally made that happen on Thursday. It was absolutely lovely to set up space in the studio and feel the stretch in all my achy runner muscles. Much needed and much appreciated. I swear I never get the same stretchy feel when I do yoga at home compared to the studio.
Friday
Rest day!
Saturday
60 min trail run, 5.5 miles, 10:55 avg/pace, 330 ft elev gain
I met Jen and Jenny for an early morning trail run. The trails were gloriously free of ice until down by the river in shady spots. Spring is on the way! Despite Jenny’s face, she had a really great time.
Later that morning, Jenny and I headed to orientation for new Girls on the Run coaches. That’s right – I’m volunteering as a GOTR coach this spring! It’s been about 5 years since the program has been at a local school so we are super excited to bring it back. We start next week!
Sunday
10.4 mile trail run, 13:29 avg/pace, 1,716 ft elev gain
It was another beautiful spring like morning with mild 30+ degree temps and bluebird skies. Even with the wind at the summit, it was the perfect day for a run on the trails up and around Mount Agamenticus with two strong women in celebration of International Women’s Day. It was great to get Nicole out on the trails. She’s been doing most of her runs on the treadmill (she did 13 miles the day before!) but did awesome. It made me so happy to see her happy smile even though her legs were toast!
FYI – it felt AMAZING to get a long run on the trails without Microspikes! All the trails were mostly clear and when there was ice, we just scooted off into the woods to get around it. My feet and ankle bones are so happy! I knew the weather can do anything but it gives me a little taste of spring fever. Shorts season is soon!
