Several studies have shown that it’s important to utilize every part of your brain regularly to possibly slow degeneration over time. According to a massive study conducted by researchers at the University of Exeter and Kings College London, solving brain teasers (mostly word puzzles) regularly can make the brain feel 10 years younger. They collected data from over 17,000 participants, making it the largest study of its kind ever conducted.
“You can think of the aging brain like an old computer,” said Dr. Howard Fillit, founding executive director and chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation. “Speed-of-processing tasks help the aging brain perform more like a new computer by training it to process visual information more quickly. And this,” he continued, “may help stem the cognitive decline.”
Some people might argue that puzzles and teasers don’t necessarily improve intelligence. However, the term intelligence simply means “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.” A person who habitually solves word puzzles and riddles would most likely improve on their knowledge of words and applications. These puzzles reinforce existing connections between our brain cells, also increasing the generation of new relationships. This will subsequently improve mental speed and thought processes. If this isn’t relative to intelligence, then we don’t what is.
It’s a great habit to solve these puzzles regularly. If not for anything else, but because they are great mood boosters!
