14 Things Runners are THankful For } happyfitmama.com

With Thanksgiving tomorrow, I’ve got gratitude on the brain in addition to Ron’s famous Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake with Gingersnap crust. Yeah, you read that right.  🙂 Of course, I’m thankful for running. It’s been a big part of my life for the past 10 years and I hope it will be there for many more.  As runners, we sometimes take for granted the ability to run and all the little things that make us love it so much.

So on this special day, take a moment and give thanks to running.

If nothing comes to mind, here’s just a snippet of things runners are thankful for:

Finding a GPS signal

There’s nothing worse than standing around with your arm in the air waiting for a GPS signal.  Or worse yet, you don’t have a GPS signal when the race starts  But when you get the right GPS watch that finds it within seconds, it’s pure runners bliss.

Rest days

If I could run everyday, I would.  But I can’t so I’m thankful for rest days to rejuvenate and recover so I’m ready for the next run.

Race directors and volunteers

If it weren’t for race directors putting in the hours and hours of behind the scenes work prior to race day, we wouldn’t be able to chase PR’s, get the bling or whatever it is you are looking for when you enter a race. And let’s not forget the volunteers.  They stand out in hot/cold, snow/rain, whatever weather and make sure that things go smoothly.  Next time you race, be sure to thank ALL the volunteers.

Runner friends

With each year that I’ve been a runner, I’ve been blessed to have found some really great running friends. Our runs have been a time to get together, chat nonstop, laugh and just sweat it out. There really is nothing better than bonding over a run.

The life lessons learned along the way

Set goals, work hard, dedication, persistence, patience – you get what you put in. It’s that simple.

The days that running feels effortless

Cherish those days.  Those are the days that you will need to remember when you are struggling to hit your paces and every mile feels like 10.  Running isn’t all rainbows and unicorns.  If we didn’t have hard days we wouldn’t appreciate the easy days.

New gear

GPS watches, sneakers, socks, sports bras, tights, shorts, tanks, long sleeves, jackets, headbands, hats and all the other running gear that we need to keep us running through every season.

A runner’s high

It’s a thing and it’s amazing.

Fresh air and nature

The more time I’m outside being active, the more sane I am. I love to see the world around me on a run. Whether it’s a sunrise, the fall leaves, a trail that takes me over rocks, roots and rivers, the ocean, or cute little neighborhoods, it’s all better while seen on my run. Even when I’m freezing my ass off, I’m thankful to be able to get out there.

Treadmills

Running on a treadmill isn’t my absolute favorite thing ever.  In fact, I try to avoid it at all costs. But when the weather conditions are downright brutal (I mean, they have to be really, really bad), safety is an issue, or I’m single parenting it because Ron is gone, the treadmill is there.

Foam rollers

They hurt like crazy but those buggers keep us going!

It’s always there

I can run anywhere, anytime. It’s never closed. I don’t need a membership card. And even when I can’t run because of an injury, I know that it’s there waiting for me whenever I’m ready.

Sense of accomplishment and pride.

To hear a non-runner exclaim, “You ran how many miles??? always makes me stand up a little taller. Yeah I did that. And I’ll probably run farther tomorrow. Every runner likes to feel a little bad ass.

The ability to run

Over the past few years, I’ve had injuries that have prevented me from running for months at a time.  With every injury, it makes me even more thankful for all the miles that I’ve been able to do. It really is a gift!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
