It could soon be time for men to take the plunge on contraceptive use.

In a move that almost certainly has women worldwide asking, “What took so long?” doctors in India announced Monday that they’ve successfully completed clinical trials on what would be the world’s first injectable contraceptive for men, according to a report from the Hindustan Times.

The Indian Council for Medical Research announced, “the product is ready” and boasted a 97.3% success rate with no side effects, the report said.

The contraceptive is designed to be delivered via an injection, under anaesthesia, to the vas deferens, the sperm-containing tube near the testicles, by a registered medical professional, the report said.

The injection, known as reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance, is not available yet. With the completion of the trials, it has been sent to VG Somani, the Drug Controller General of India for approval, the report said. Somani estimated the approval would take between six and seven months.[More U.S. News] CBS sued by top reality exec for alleged race and age discrimination »

The council, a leader in biomedical research in India, said the contraceptive is effective for 13 years and was designed as a replacement to surgical vasectomy. The report said doctors believe the injection will appeal to more men than the vasectomy procedure since it is less invasive.

Researchers in the US have been working on a similar contraceptive, but that process is far from complete. In the UK, meanwhile, researchers shut down a clinical trial in 2016 because subjects complained of numerous side effects.
