If you are anything like me, most of your weekly send goes on purchasing food. And whilst investing in your health with good quality food is worth every cent, it can be easy to rack up some big $$ in doing so. Having a budget is all well in good in theory, but in practice, they can be pretty hard to stick to.

Here are my favourite simple tips to reduce your weekly grocery expenditure so you can free it up for the things that really matter (…like more food, obvs).

      1. Eat Seasonally

It can be super hard today to figure out what is in season and what isn’t since most of our food is available year-round. Even pantry staples like garlic or greens can have seasons. So, do your research and figure out what’s in season. Or even just visit your local farmers market. You’ll save money and get some better produce at the same time.

      2. Root to Stem eating

So, we picked it here, root to stem eating is going to be big in 2018. Why? Because it can save you money and save you from wasting most of the vegetable. So, keep those broccoli stems and leave that skin of the sweet potato.

      3.  Stick to a list

Food shopping is meant to be confusing. Grocers are laid out so that they are overwhelming and makes you purchase a whole lot of things that you don’t really need. So, make a list and stick to it. And also, don’t shop when you are hungry because we all know how that turns out.

      4. Sayonara Superfoods

Did you just spend $30 on some superfood that is promising to change your life? Well, that’s your first mistake. Whilst there are some super helpful superfoods out there, they are necessary for you to live a healthy life. And we often forget that most of our everyday foods are superfoods. I mean who doesn’t love the humble broccoli, cauliflower and spinach.

      5. Give some love to the ‘ugly’ veg

Have you seen the imperfect picks section at Harris Farm or the Odd bunch at Woolies and walked straight past? Stop right there! There is heaps of really good produce in these sections (some that look normal if you ask me) and they can be up to 50% off the normal price. A great way to help out our Aussie farmer and to save some money at the same time!

      6. Store it well

Did you know that there are better ways to store your food to make it last the longest and taste the best? Like for example did you know that you can revitalise your greens by putting them in some water for 10-20mins and then spin them dry? I certainly didn’t.

      7. Buy in Bulk

Bulk food stores have gotten HUGE recently and for good reason. You don’t have to pay for packaging which means extra $$ in your pocket and less waste ending up in your trash bin.
